Derived from “mug shots,” my portraits describe the loneliness of the human condition.  I am also intrigued by the awkward imbalance of power which exists specific to the mug shot as a form of documentation.  Some individuals present themselves in defiance of their “captors”while others are entirely consumed with their own intense set of circumstances.  The coexistence of these two realities produces images which are dynamic and often moving.  As an artist, the telling of these narratives of visual tension is not enough.  It is important to present a multitude of mediums and visual interpretations of these images as they stand as a counterpoint to the traditional form of documentation.  These works are meant to create a space for dialogue about those often situated on the fringes of society and the humanity which struggles to be preserved in the criminal justice system.
